It is solely intended for my enjoyment and shared with others to satisfy their curiosity.
Warnings: Slash M/M, OC, Char Death (Not Mains), Xeno, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, and what nots. Just covering the bases here.Oh and in the future (blush) Sex.

Summary: Neytiri:: “Our Great Mother does not take sides. She protects only the balance of life”. In the days following the war the losses to the Na'vi had yet to be felt. The balance was destroyed and the lives of everyone would never be the same. Drawn into this uncertain future two young men, one Na’vi, the other Human are brought together to discover that they are not so different after all. Pain, suffering and loss are the great equalizer. Can they heal the wounds that each carry, and in learning can they heals the wounds of a world? Will they find the strength and courage to stand and be counted despite deep seeded fears and mistrust? Even with the help of Ewya can they learn then teach others how to protect the balance of life?

Mo’at stood up and stepped back, Shock on her face.
“His Pa arikoe’?” she gasped. “His Pa arikoe’! How. Why? Why was he not here with him?”

me’Pa arik(1) were rare among the Na’vi. There were maybe one pair born in every 10 generations. Always identical, and never separated. It was unthinkable. me’Pa arik were precious to the People. They were both blessed and cursed by Eywa. Said each be born with only half of a complete soul. The Pa arik having the other half. They lived together their entire lives. One the hunter-provider. The other always the clans Ol’ Karyusi Fpi oe’tirolaen(2), and very often the clans Fyawìntxu tì Oe’tirea(3). If they mated, they were always mated to the same person. Many times they choose to become mated to each other when for some reason either they could not agree or the potential mate had difficulty being with one of the “Half Souled”. They were protected, almost revered by some. But they were never separated. Never. It was not unusual if one died that the other would take their own life. It was not considered suicide which was unheard of among the Na’vi for how could one live with only half their soul in this world, and the other half within Eywa.

Sänume started to speak when Mo’at’s face turned even paler.
“He goes to the Nair Terkup?(4)” she whispered, “Alone?” before she realized that she had spoken thus to the Thsiak of another clan. Mo’ats ears lowered in shame. “Sister, I spoke without thinking. Forgive me it is not my place to…”

Sänume waved her hand, “No. I understand what you must think, feel. It is hard to understand and even harder to explain, but I will try.”

Mo’at shook her head kneeling next to Sänume. “You have no need”, but again her words were waved away.

“It is right that I tell you. We are at your Vitraya Ramunong and,” She paused for a long moment. “it will help me to speak of it.” Mo’at just nodded.

Sänume took a deep breath and seemed to gather herself. She had wanted to talk to someone about the two boys for longer than she realized, but had been afraid to with anyone from her own clan. She was actually grateful to Mo’at, it was just that she never imagined it would be under these circumstances. War with the Tawtute(5). War! War, with people from another world. People that wanted to destroy the heart of the Omaticaya. She wanted to scream, to cry, fight, to rail at the Sky Peoples Eywa for ever allowing them to be born. Realizing she was trying to hide from her story she slowly raised her head closing her eyes for a long moment.

Looking at Mo’at she seemed to struggle trying to find the words. Where to start? Finally she nodded her head.
“First do not worry that Ne’Vanya has gone to the Nair Terkup. Until Cha’ro’s body is found and the proper ceremonies are performed he will not start the Nair Terkup.” Her eyes seemed to shift away for a moment, and her ears lowered. “Even then I am not so sure that he will do the Nair Terkup.”

Sänume paused to look at Mo’at to see how she would react to hearing that. Mo’at’s face showed the confused look she expected and her ears flicked forward and back as she tried to take in what she was being told.

Sänume sighed and started speaking again.
“Ne’Vanya and Cha’ro were not as we were told me’Pa arik would be. They seemed to differ in some subtle, and in some very major ways from what the teachings tell us.” Rubbing her eyes she continued. “The first difference was just how opposite they were in many ways. Not in looks, but in how they saw the world. Ne’Vanya was kind, thoughtful, and intelligent. He seemed to embody all the positive traits of the People.” She gave a sad smile, but then her face became almost hard. “Cha’ro was brash, out spoken, some would even say rude. He was also sometimes cruel to those around him. He loved the moment of the kill in the hunt more than a hunter should. He often laughed at the pain of others and was very quick to anger.”

Around them the others went about their appointed duties. She saw some looking at her and the Tsahik from the Omaticaya. She gave them a weary smile and concentrated on what she was telling Mo’at.

She shook her head as if to rid it of a bad memory and continued. “He was respected as a Warrior and Hunter. His skill was unmatched by any other in the clan. This should have earned him many admirers; instead he seemed to instill fear more than friendship, and” She paused for a second, “he seemed to want it that way.” Afraid to see what might be showing in Mo’ats’ eyes she went on. “The only person he didn’t push away was Ashico. She thought he could do no wrong, and Cha’ro decided that she was to be their mate. Ashico was pleased when he announced it, but Ne’Vanya was not.”

Her ears lowered at the memory. “It was learned later that Cha’ro had not discussed it with his brother instead he told Ne’Vanya that he had no choice in the matter. To say the least Ne’Vanya was not happy, but he accepted it as he had always accepted any major decision the Cha’ro made in their lives. Ashico just seemed amused at Ne’Vanyas’ reaction. Ashico, sadly it seems is very much like Cha’ro in too many ways. She has always dismissed Ne’Vanya as being the weaker of the pair.”

Sänumes’ ears flicked back as she heard Mo’ats’ quiet hiss. Mo’at listened to Sänume with a growing disquiet. To control another even if that other was your Pa arik was not healthy. Her posture must have shown some of her thoughts because Sänume nodded. “I see you begin to understand” Mo’at nodded.

Sänume just sighed as she continued her tale. “When Toruk Makto came to ask the Olo’ Pa’li to help fight the Tawtute, Cha’ro was the first to step forward, even before the Olo’eyctan spoke.” She heard a low growl.

Mo’at looked almost angry at hearing this, but said nothing.

“Akwey(6) was not pleased” Sänume said with a grimace. “We have as yet decided on who will be the next Olo’eyctan.” She knew that in some clans where the Tsahik was not female the son of the Olo’eyctan would be the next leader. But when the next Tsahik was female the next Olo’eyctan was decided by the current one and his mate the clans Tsahik.

“I’m sure that Cha’ro believed himself to be the best choice.” She said. “After all he was the best hunter, best fighter among the Olo’ Pa’li (7). Even Akwey had told him that.” Her eyes grew hard and she almost snarled. “But! Neither Akwey or I ever gave him any impression that he was our choice to lead the clan once Akwey goes to be with Eywa. Besides Tien té ,my daughter would never consent to bonding with Cha’ro.” She said thru clenched teeth.

She paused waiting to see of Mo’at would say anything, but she remained silent.

“ If anything,” she continued, “because of the way others looked at Cha’ro with fear, and his treatment of Ne’Vanya we had both decided he would never be chosen to lead. Eywa would never bless his leadership. We could only see disaster if such a man was given power over others.”

Mo’at cleared her throat. “But the Tsahik and Olo’eyctan always become mated and leaders of the.. ” She stopped suddenly realizing that even for the Omaticaya this was not always true. Had not Jake and Neytiri mated even though Tus’tey was to lead after Eytucan? She shook her head and motioned the younger Tsahik to continue.

“I know in your clan that the Tsahik and the Olo’eyctan are always mated and lead the clan together, but it is not always so with ours.” Sänume said. “We were waiting to see who it would be that would warm my daughters heart, and believed that he would also be Eywa choice. Just not Cha’ro!” Without realizing it Sänume had her ears laid flat and her tail was lashing in agitation.

Others around there were looking at the two Tsahik and growing nervous at Sänume’s outburst.

“Mawey Na’vi’a, mawey(8)” Sänume waved them back. “It is ok. Go. Do what needs doing” She motioned the people back that were coming towards them.

“When Awkey and I agreed to join your fight against the Sky People” She placed her hand on e Mo’ats arm a gave her a supportive smile. “again Cha’ro put himself before all others insisting that he be the one to lead the Olo’ Pa’li.” Grim faced she said, “It was obvious in his posture and the tone of his voice that he did not think Awkey up to the task.”

Mo’at almost spoke out, but knew it was not her place to say anything. She was not a member of the Olo’ Pa’li. She had not been there, so wisely or not kept silent and listened. After all Jake had in a moment of frustration called her the Dragon Lady, and she had come to see through his eyes that maybe, just maybe he might have a point. A very minor point she was sure, but a point never the less. Her eyes softened for a moment at the memory. Sänume made a small sound and Mo’at turned her attention back to her.

“Forgive me. You must think me” She looked embarrassed at Sänume, “rude or uncaring. Even at this terrible time memories can distract us from what is important right now. I’m sorry I did not mean to make you think your words were being taken lightly. They are not.” She said.

Sänume just nodded. “I understand. Please, I didn’t think that. You have been nothing but supportive.” She gave Mo’at a small smile (even if there was pain in that smile). “Happy memories are one of the things that we are blessed with by Eywa. Happy memories are more important at times like this.”

Mo’at smiled back at her. “Thank you sister. You are right, we will need every bit of happiness we can remember in the days to come. Please continue. What happened next? I would like to hear all if you think it will do good”.

Sänume nodded and continued. “Awkey just glared at Cha’ro and told him to step back with the rest of the clan to his proper place. The look on Cha’ro’s face was not a pleasant one. He gestured to me and to Toruk Makto to walk a bit apart, then apologized to your JakeSully for our clans rudeness.” She gave Mo’at a brief smile. “Your JakeSully is a good man, and leader. He acted as if nothing untoward had happened.”

Mo’at wasn’t sure if that was the case, or if Jake just didn’t understand how much of an insult it could have been. She decided not to say anything to Sänume, and just smiled.

“After Toruk Makto left to gather more clans” she continued, “Awkey and I spoke at length. It was decided that Cha’ro would not come, but instead would be left behind to help protect the clan. More importantly it had not been thought that Ne’Vanya would be coming with us. For one thing he is to complete his training within the next couple of days as Ol’ Karyus’en. His Father, Cajeiri our current Ol’ Karyus’en had not wanted to interrupt him at the final stage.” She noticed a flash of something on Mo’at’s face, but decided not to say anything. “Instead Cajeiri wanted Rhalina to go instead. She had finished her training a few moons ago and was now the clans second Ol’ Karyusé”.

Sänume could not keep a hint of pride out of her voice. Having two clan singers was not that unusual, but to have three was almost an unheard of blessing. The skills required to be Ol’ Karyusi were great, and once someone was found with the abilities their training took years. Mastery took a lifetime. They were as important to a clans as the Tsahik. While the Tsahik was responsible for the Spiritual life of the clan, and for understanding what Eywas’ will was for them, the Ol’ Karyusi were the keepers of a clans history. It was through their songs that children learned what it was to be not only Na’vi, but Olo’ Pa’li as well. Having two meant that not only could the teaching be done easier and faster, but that the clan also had someone to go to during the time set aside for teaching for instruction and guidance. Very often the Ol’ Karyusi was also the emotional guide. They kept individual Na’vi in balance during time of grief or stress. Having a third made the Olo’ Pa’li the envy of every other clan.

Sänume couldn’t keep the pride out of her voice as she knew that Mo’at would realize this. Mo’ats’ reaction was not what Sänume expected. It was not envy she saw, but a deep sadness as tears gathered at the corner of Mo’ats eyes.

“Sister. What is wrong?” she asked deeply troubled. She did not think that hearing about Cha’ro could have affected Mo’at in that way.

Mo’at tried to gather her flagging emotions. It was not right for her to lay her burden on the other woman. Sänume had enough to deal with at the moment. She just shook her head. “It is..” she paused seeming to recover from whatever it had been “now is not the time for my.. No. Please tell me what happened with Ne’Vanya. That is what is important now.”

Sänume hesitated a moment, but decided that if Mo’at did not feel comfortable telling her what had caused such sadness, then it was not right for her to press the grieving woman to satisfy her curiosity.

“Ah… I…yes.” She paused again as the urge to try to get Mo’at to open up almost over came her common sense along with her sense of duty to courtesy. “Cajeiri actually wanted to come himself, but his age and failing body would have made the trip difficult, and with Ne’Vanya ready to complete his training it would not have been the right thing to do. Awkey and I completely agreed. We also worried that such a trip would be too hard on him and we could not allow him to be in such danger.” She watched Mo’at to see her reaction still trying to understand what had caused her earlier reaction. Mo’at only showed concern for her words.

Sänume paused a moment then continued. “When Cha’ro heard that he was to be left behind he came to talk to Awkey.” She snorted. “Though talk is too weak a word”. Never have I heard a clansman take that tone with Awkey. He told him that Ne’Vanya’s training was unimportant. He was the best warrior and as such deserved to lead the Olo’ Pa’li. He said it was an insult to be left behind protecting old women, children and those too weak to fight. A singer was more important? Said to just leave “ the little Sniveler” at home where it was safe. Ne’Vanya would be useless anyway.” She watched as Mo’ats eyes grew wider and her tail was held ridged with just the end quivering. She expected Mo’at to say something, but the other woman just sat silent waiting.

“It is the first time I have ever seen Awkey speechless. I could feel the anger pouring off of him. It was almost a living thing, and.. I think I was a bit afraid of my mate for the first time in my life. Awkey exploded. He looked at Cha’ro in disbelief. Asking how he could even consider leaving his Pa arik? They were never separated in such a way! Never! How could he say such things about his brother? Had he even talked to Ne’Vanya? Cha’ro just sniffed, and asked why should he? His brother’s wishes didn’t matter. He was unimportant. Ne’Vanya would do what every Cha’ro told him to, so why talk to him.” Sänume voice had grown very soft. The shame of what she had just said to an outsider hitting her like a striking Palulukan(9). She reluctantly looked at Mo’at but there was no condemnation it the kind face looking back at her.

Mo’at was shaken. For the Tsahik of another clan to admit something that private was a sign of just how distressed the other woman was. The last thing Mo’at wanted was for Sänume to be uncomfortable. Mo’at did not want to add to the sadness that weighed the younger woman down. The pain of knowing what had happened to Ne’vanya was more than she could comprehend, and to have a Pa arik as the person who caused that pain to Sänume and Ne’Vanya was paramount to sacrilege. me’Pa arik were supposed to be blessed. They were supposed to bring joy and pride not sadness and shame. It was believed that Eywa only allowed me’Pa arik to be born into a worthy clan.

Mo’ats heart broke a little more. “Sister, look at me. Please. You do me great honor in trusting me with this. There is no shame. It is I that should be ashamed for pushing your questions of me aside. I am grateful that you feel you can tell me these things. Please let me help you bear this burden. You have born it alone for too long.” She took the distraught woman’s hand. “Eywa has brought you to me. You must know this.” She hoped that Sänume believed in the truth of her words.

Sänume let the tension leave her body. It was an unexpected gift that Mo’at offered and, in truth she was grateful. Mo’at was right. Eywa must have brought them together. She did notice however that the older woman still had not said what was troubling her. But now was not the time to remind her of that.

“Think no more on it. You were saying how Awkey and Cha’ro were discussing the decision for them not to come.” Mo’at gently encouraged her to continue.

Sänume took a deep breath. “Awkey stood there for a moment not saying anything. I think.. I think he couldn’t believe what Cha’ro was saying. He started to say something but Cha’ro interrupted him again distain thick in his voice, and said “Fine. That if he was not to lead the warriors he would accept the decision of his Olo’eyctan. But he was not going to be left behind. He would come on his own if necessary.” I saw the look in Cha’ros’ eyes and what I saw struck me to the core of my soul. I saw blood and desire for violence, and I saw something I have no words for. I felt fear.” She shuddered looking back, seeing those eyes again in her mind. “I touched Awkey to get his attention. He looked at me and I just shook my head indicating that we would talk about this when we were alone. Askey turned back to Cha’ro and told him to leave. I believe it took all his strength not to strike him down.” She was silent for so long that Mo’at thought that she had either finished or was unable to go on. Just as she was about to say something Sänume continued.

“I don’t know what was said to Ne’Vanya or to Cajeiri or Rhalina. The next morning Cajeiri came to us and said that Rhalina was ill and could not leave her dwelling, that she would not be well enough to travel when it came time for the clan to leave.” He would not look me in the eye and when I asked if Rhalina needed me to check on he, he shook his head and then said that it was not needed. He then said that Ne’Vanya had come to him, had heard that Rhalina was was not well, and said he would go in her place.”

I could tell that Cajeiri was close to tears, but with his training it was a thing he could hide well from most people. I think I also saw fear in his eyes as well.

Taking a breath she continued. “He told us that Ne’Vanya said he could always complete his training as soon as they returned. It was too important to a clan, especially one going to war to go without an Ol’ Karyusi there to bond with Eywa, to witness this thing through her and to remember so that future Olo’ Pa’li would know and learn from what was to happen. No clan would be a part of something so life changing to the People and not have a singer there to sing what would happen into the future.” Before Awkey or I could say anything Cajeiri excused himself wanting to check on Rhalina and left. “There was no time to argue. The clan was making ready to leave at first light.” Sänume’s head was bowed and her ears were laying flat against her head, tears in her eyes as she spoke. “There was just not enough time.”

Mo’at pulled the young woman into a comforting hug. At the moment she could not think of what to say.

Sänume cried for a few minutes and then pulled herself together. “During the ride here it came to our attention that Cha’ro was saying that Awkey had grown weak and feeble. That his mind was not sharp enough to lead the warriors into a battle like this. He said he was too soft and did not have a warrior’s spirit if he believed that Cha’ro was not the right one to lead the fight.” She looked down at her hands, then “I don’t know if Awkey confronted Cha’ro about the words being said. I don’t think there was time before the battle started.” She looked up and Mo’at saw fear in her eyes. “I will not stop worrying until the fight is over and Awkey returns to me.” She hung her head and closed her eyes, tears running down her cheeks.

For a long time Sänume was silent just looking down and crying quietly. Mo’at thought that she had finished, but at the moment she was at a loss for words. What could she say to this? She had no experience with what had gone on within the Olo’ Pa’li. Most of what she had heard went against everything she was brought up to believe in. What she knew of the People and their ways. Just as she was about to say something Sänume started talking again.

“I think I know why Eywa created Ne’Vanya as Pa arik to Cha’ro. I think that the soul of Cha’ro was…” She seemed to be searching for the right word. “damaged… in some way, broken. Eywa knew that without Ne’vanya… when the time came for his soul to enter the world, that if there was not a… balance..” She struggled to put into words what had before only been a feeling. “something terrible, worse than what has happened would have come to be”. She sighed. Sometimes it was so very hard to know what Eywa wants. To grasp the larger picture, and allow Eywa to work towards a result no one but she can see.

“I understand how you feel.” Mo’at said in a quite voice. “It is hard to know the will of Eywa when things make no sense. It is hard to believe that she knows what is best when horrible things happen.”

Mo’at paused as if wondering if she should explain further. She felt a stab of guilt at her pettiness and pride. Sänume deserved better from her after opening her heart. “When we believed that JakeSully had betrayed us to the Sky People I did not believe that the signs Eywa had shown us were true. How could she choose him? One of the demons that had destroyed so much that was dear to me? Eytukan, my mate, the leader of my people dead. For what? The loss of our Ol’ Karyusé with none to replace her. The loss of so many of my People. My home destroyed. The Omaticaya now homeless and fighting for not only our lives, but the voices of our ancestors, voices who spoke to us through the Tree of Souls and to some extent of the voice Eywa as well.” Tears now falling non-stop.

Mo’at continued to cry and then spoke softly “I was, am angry! Angry at Eywa. How could she allow this to happen?”

Sänume started to speak but Mo’at waved her hand. “I know. Eywa does not take sides. She only protects the balance of life.” Mo’at had a bitter sound to her voice. “What balance?” Surprised at the bitterness in her own voice. “How will we ever recover with the loss of so much? So many of the Omaticaya dead, and more dying as we sit here waiting for this to end. How do I keep my faith in Eywa in light of everything that has happened? What still may happen? How much more loss can I be expected to hold and not break?” Mo’at fell silent. Only the tears continued to flow.

Mo’ats voice had gotten quieter and more pain filled until all Sänume could hear was the heart of this remarkable woman on the verge of shattering. This woman, who had just now let her pour out her own pain and offered comfort taking it in and sharing it, making her pain less. She realized now what had caused Mo’ats earlier reaction and felt shame at her proud boast of three clan singers. Yes she knew that some of her people would die fighting the Sky People today. She knew it was possible her own Awkey, her life mate might be dead somewhere out there. Killed in the fighting, or and she had to swallow hard as the fear rose in her heart… or maybe at the hands of one of her own People. Even with the inevitable death of some of her people and possibly even her mate she still had her home. It had not been torn asunder in front of her eyes. They still had their clan singers, and weaver and artists. All of the Olo’ Pa’li, friends, family, that made her clan more than just a place, the people that made it home. She wondered if her faith in Eywa could stand the type of losses that Mo’at and the Omaticaya had lived through. She thought of Ne’Vanya and wondered briefly where he was, what he was doing. She pushed that thought aside for the moment. Mo’at needed her more than the grieving me’Pa arik. She would find him soon and do what she could for him.

She had some idea how the Olo’ Pa’li might help, but that was for another time. Until then she gathered the fragile woman into her arms and held her as she cried. She sent a prayer to Eywa, thanking her for bringing this incredible woman into her life. She prayed that Eywa would find a way to help her and her people out of this dark day into the light of a brighter future. But mostly she just prayed, prayed and cried.

Reference:

1. Pa arik: Twin. Na’vi translates to “Half Soul”. me’Pa arik (Plural), Pa arikoe (-oe Masculine gender)
2. Ol’ Karyusi Fpi oe’tirolaen: Singer of the Past. Clan Historian. Closest human equivalent would be councilor. They help maintain the emotional balance of the tribe and each individual.
4. Nair Terkup: “The Death Watch” The Na’vi have no word or concept of suicide. Compared to the human tradition of a Wake. When asked if a Pa arik (Twin) goes to the Nair Terkup alone there meaning changes to “Death
     of the Watcher”
5. Tawtute: Na’vi for Humans. Translates as “Sky People”
6. Akwey: Olo'eyktan, Clan leader of the Olo’ Pa’il
7. Olo’ Pa’li: Name of the Horse Clan of the Planes.
8. Mawey Na’vi’a, mawey: “Calm down People, Be Calm” Closest translation would be “Patience guys, patience”
9. Palulukan: Thanator (human). Apex land predator. It fears nothing. Even the Na’vi who are hunters without pier fear this on the ground as much as they fear Toruk in the air. So great is that ingrained fear that there are no songs
sung about it. They are impossibly hard to kill.

TBC

Without his presence she feared that her people would not only lose heart but the will to fight as well. Too many had died at the hands of the Tawtute(4). Too many important positions within the clan now had no one to fill them. In normal times if disaster struck she could reach out to one of the other clans, appealing to them to send someone with the needed skills. Someone who would leave their own clan and was willing to join the Omaticaya people. Someone who could fill the void left by the untimely death. After today and the huge loss of life, she knew that those clans would also lose individuals important to them. People they also could not afford to lose, and it was doubtful that they could send someone from their clans to take up the positions needed within hers.

It was the Na'vi way for one clan to help another if they had no one to fill a needed position or if they were too many or too few men or women in individual clans for mating. She had lost her mate, Eytucan, and with his death as clan their leader Tsu’tey was forced to become Olo’eyctan(6) at too a young an age. Tsu'tey was a strong and fearless warrior, but he had not yet learned all he needed to lead the people. He was still too headstrong, still too ruled by his emotions to think with his head. Given time, she was sure he would make a very good leader for the people.

Her daughter, Neytiri had not been injured in the destruction of Home Tree, and for that Mo'at was eternally grateful. She had been very worried about her when they had believed that Jakesully had betrayed them. Mo'at feared she would not be able to handle both the stress of losing their home and losing her life mate. After her shock at seeing the great Toruk descending out of the sky being ridden by Jakesully, realizing that they had been wrong and that Ewya truly had touched him, her heart was lighter. Toruk Makto had brought hope when all there was despair.

Sadly, they had lost so many other people who were essential to clan life. Mo’at closed her eyes and could see each face clearly. Many of them she had watched grow from child to adult, passing the trials and taking their place among the people. Each one special in their own right, however there were some whose loss would be felt more than others. Jago'ji, the clans Ol’Karyusi Fpi oe’tirolaen(7) was a loss almost too much to bear. Their Clan history, the Songs of those deeds, the lessons learned… gone. The history of the Na’vi from the time of the first songs would not be taught to the young until a new Ol’Karyusi(8) could be chosen and trained.

Mo'at looked at the other clan leaders around her, grateful beyond belief for their support. The me’Tshiak(9) from each of the clans spoke quietly together, the stress of the situation clear on each face while around them deep in Tsaheylu(10) with Ewya the Ay'Ol' Karyusi listened to not only the voices of the ancestors, but the voice of Ewya and to some extent the voices of the Na'vi fighting beyond their sight. Again her heart broke a little more as she thought of all those that had died and those currently risking their lives for the Omaticaya.

Suddenly she heard a heart rending cry from behind her and saw Sänume the Tsahik of the Olo’ Pa’li(11) Clan rush to catch a young man as he violently broke the bond then collapsed. The man, barely out of childhood was curled in upon himself, tears streaming down his face, mouth open but with no sound coming out after that first wail of grief. Mo’at ran to their side.

“Sänume, what has happened?”
The younger Tsahik looked up at Mo’at. “I am not sure, and I fear what it might be.”
Sänume held the young man rocking him gently while rubbing comforting circles on his back.
“Ne’vanya. Child what is wrong”.
The young man continued to cry with a ferocity that Mo’at had rarely seen. She knew grief, but this seemed to go beyond any sadness she had known. Worried she looked to Sänume.
“Is there anything I can do?”
“Not at the moment. I need to try and calm him down, but thank you”. The other woman answered.
“We have calming herbs if you need them.  They are strong, and there is enough to put him to sleep if it is needed”. Mo’at said.  Sänume looked up grateful and was about to agree when Ne’vanya Shouted out a single name;
“Cha’ro!”
He stood and ran from the Tree towards the entrance to the valley. Sänume seemed to almost collapse in on herself and Mo’at caught her before she folded to the ground.

Mo’at started to call to one of the Warriors that had been left to guard them, planning on telling him to catch the grief-stricken boy and bring him back when Sänume placed her hand on her arm and shook her head.

“Let him go” she said in a broken voice barely above a whisper. “He has lost half his soul”.
Mo’at looked in her eyes and saw a depth of sorrow and horror that was chilling.
“Half his soul? I.. I do not understand” she said in a whisper. The term was not one she was familiar with.
“His mate?” she asked.
Sänume shook her head and said with tears streaming down her face. “His Pa arikoe’ (12)”.

Translation:
(1) Toruk: The Great Leonopteryx (Na'vi name: Toruk meaning "Last Shadow"). The balance was destroyed and the lives of Omaticaya and those humans chosen to stay would never be the same.

It would take two young men from very different worlds, both soul sick, broken and wounded in heart to restore the balance.

Chapter 2
TRISTAN

Pain! I don't think I've ever felt such pain. It was a living thing clawing at me. The last thing I remembered was, frantically searching the ground for my brother, telling myself over and over that I would find him. I HAD to find Vernon! He HAD to be alive! Scared I wouldn't find him in time, or God forbid dead or at all, I was not paying attention to anything else. Completely focused on the dense jungle below, single-mindedly looking through the window of Selfridges’ modified personal shuttle, I was flying as low over the massive trees as I could get. Scared if I even blinked I would miss some telltale sign. A gleam of metal, a flash of pale skin, blonde hair.. anything that might give me hope of finding him.

Out of the corner of my eye something caught my attention. Two Banshees coming at me, from out of the bright light of Polyphemus, the gas giant that Pandora orbited around. I was so concentrated on trying to see through the vast vegetation searching for any movement, any possible indication of the A.M.P(1) that Vernon had been wearing during the attack that I didn't look up until it was too late. I slammed the control stick hard trying to avoid them, but there wasn’t enough time. They came at me faster than I thought possible. Time seemed to stand still then everything sped up and the massive flying lizards slammed into the shuttle, one striking it head on, the other somewhere on the right where the two sets of dual flight blades were mounted. The sound of one of those huge bodies smashing into the poly glass windows was deafening. Then one of the Banshees gave an agonizing screech and the sound of metal twisting and buckling assaulted my ears. The Shuttle suddenly listed to the right and then plunged down through the trees making a noise like a thousand screeching voices crying out in protest. I was thrown forward in my seat, my head impacting on the control panel, bright stars flashed behind my eyes, and then... darkness.

I awoke to the smell of smoke and a sickening smell of burning plastic. Disoriented, I had no idea where I was, and it took me a minute to piece together what had happened. The Banshees had brought the shuttle down! It was a miracle that I was still alive, the poly glass window had cracked, but not shattered, if it had I would've been dead. Pandora’s atmosphere killing me. The way I felt I wasn't sure if that was good or bad.

I had no idea how long I had been unconscious. Looking at the myriad of cracks in the Poly-Glass window, I remembered I wasn’t wearing an Eco-Mask (I had taken it off as it was blocking my ability to see), I started to panic. I struggled frantically at the seat restraints managing to find the free myself. The body of the Banshee that has struck me head on was resting against the window. My biggest fear at that moment was that the weight would cause the spider web of cracks running all through the Poly-Glass to shatter and Pandora's atmosphere would finish the job that the Banshees started.

I finally managed to free myself and searched frantically for the emergency sealant, praying I could find it before the glass finally gave way under the stress. I looked around and spotted the can of the poly resin spray on the bulkhead to the left of me. I breathed a sigh of relief and applied it to the window. Hoping it was not too late, hoping that it was strong enough to hold. So far, the atmosphere breach warning was not blaring through the cockpit. I hoped that it was because there was no leak and not that the warning system itself was damaged. The air smelled fine, as fine as any recirculated air could. I didn't smell any of the gases from Pandora's atmosphere seeping into the cabin.

I sat there for a few minutes trying to gather my wits trying to figure out what I needed to do. Shaking my head my mind started to clear. When my brain finally kicked into gear my first coherent though was…Help! I needed to get help. I reached for the control panel and hit the communications switch. “Hell's Gate Tower, this is Shuttle Selfridge One. Can anyone hear me?” I waited a moment but there was no reply. Again I repeated “Hell's Gate Tower, this is Shuttle Selfridge One. Can anyone hear me? And still no answer. I knew my voice was getting more and more frantic… “Hell's Gate Tower, this is Shuttle Selfridge One. Please come in. Hell's Gate, is anyone there? I need help”. Again all I heard was silence. On the edge of panic I sent again, “This is Tristan Davis, aboard the Shuttle Selfridge One. I've crashed in the forest, I’m not sure where, the navigation systems not working. Please respond!!” Again there was only silence. Then it hit me. Of course the navigation system wasn't working I had forgotten all about the flux, but the flux didn't affect com systems did it? Why wasn't anyone answering? A terrifying thought struck me. Had the Na'vi attacked the base? Was anyone still alive? I didn't really believe that the Na'vi would attack Hells Gate. If they had, I… I didn't think I could blame them after what we had done.

I sat there shaking, my head in my hands. I whispered “when did everything go so wrong?” My only answer was the continuing sounds of the Shuttle settling, and the faint sounds of the forest outside. So much of this just didn't make any sense.

Reference:
(1) AMP: Amplified Mobility Platform

TBC

Feedback and ConCrit is always welcome.

Chapter 1
To Protect the Balance

…. Ewya dreamed and in dreaming remembered.

It was the time before the first songs as her favorite children would call it. Ewya(1) was not conscious as an individual would be. She was technically not what you would consider a thinking breathing person. Rather, her consciousness was a meld of all living things on Pandora. The Na'vi believe her to be divine. That she could see not only the past, but the present and future as well. They looked to her for signs, indications of what they should do in situations beyond their understanding. Each clan has a person that shared a very special bond with what could be called the world mind. Ewya, was the sum total of all life on Pandora. For generations beyond counting the Na'vi had joined their minds to that of the planet and over the preceding millennia she became something more. The vast neural network not only joined her to every living thing on the planet, but also allowed her to feel any disturbance in the space around her.

In those days there were oceans of light, and trees whose tops touch the sky. Herds of purple Yerik(2) thundered across the vast plains while flying beasts of gold and bronze mastered the currents and made the sky their own. There were shrill, viridian things that haunted deep rivers, and brightly lit creatures that were deadly to the slightest touch. It was a time of the universe manifesting its will upon this world in all its aspects; creating life in diverse and amazing shapes. It was a time of growth, of new things coming into existence. Nature run rampant, impossible events, magnificent paradoxes, dreams come true, dream gone awry. It was a time of dreams assuming reality.

It was a miraculous time, a time when the dreams of the universe became reality. It was the time of the birth of Ewya, she who became the guiding force and protector for all life on Pandora. It was the time before the Na'vi took the first steps upon this incredible world that the mind of Ewya came into existence, expanded and started to become aware.

And from that time forward, until now, it was a time of beauty, harmony and peace when all of her creatures were in balance. Each creature, taking only what was needed, never more; content to live their lives, respecting the world and all its creatures, knowing to the very core of their being that the balance must be maintained that anything else was unthinkable. All of her children treating each other with respect and love, grateful that there needs were met.

Far from Pandora, across the vastness of space the universe had created another world. The world of Man. The eons passed and then came the time of Man, the slave of fear, was emerging unaware that much of the terror that was to come was the result of nothing else but the fact that Man, the self styled master of the universe, had come in to existence. Mankind lived brief lives and bred prodigiously. Within a few centuries they rose to dominance, and in their greed, all but destroyed the world of their birth. With their world becoming all but uninhabitable the fear of the unknown vastness of space began to lose its hold.

With cold intelligence, Man began searching the stars and came upon the world of Pandora. The first to cross that vast distance and land on Pandora discovered a world of incredible beauty with creatures that seemed to be born out of nightmares. Surrounded by walls of metal, Man gained courage as little to no resistance was offered, and considered themselves supreme. When Man first met the Na'vi they were greeted with open arms, and a childlike curiosity. Understanding nothing, Man believed the natives of the planet had no idea of the wealth that was beneath their feet. It was inconceivable to them that the powerful metal held no value to those born upon this rich world. This beautiful world remained untouched, still alive and vibrant and Man could not understand why the Na'vi didn't want to take advantage of it. There was so much wealth to be had. Yet the Na’vi, in Man’s view were either to ignorant or to lazy to exploit it.

Man began to feel jealous of the Na'vi, and then as they had always done, Man began to feel the malice.

The Na'vi could not envision the growing darkness in the heart of Man. They had dwelt for countless eons upon their planet, living in balance with all life. They knew of Mans strange ways, but consider them blind or insane. Some even considered Man not greatly different from beasts in their inability to See.

The Na'vi continued to live in their traditional ways, spending their days as they always have, caring for one another and the world around them. Rational, thoughtful, at one with themselves and the world of their birth, they were unable to comprehend the change that had come to their world. As it almost always is, with the taint spread by the touch of Man, they too late began to understand.

They had learned the sky people's language and had taught them to speak Na’vi. They had tried to teach Man to see, to understand the flow of life, its unending energy, and the importance of balance, the need to respect Ewya. But Man was blind. Man could not see. It also seemed that Man could not learn. So they turned from Man returning to the way of life they had always lived.

Then this upstart Man began to spread like a pestilence across the world. A pestilence struck at the Na'vi and every thing that was sacred to life. For it was not only death Man brought, but terror to. Willfully Man started to make of the Na'vi world nothing but ruins and bones.

And for the first time Ewya, began know Fear.

And Man, the slave of fear, arrogant in his ignorance, cruel in his self-importance continued his horrifying progress. He was blind to the huge disruptions brought on by his apparent petty ambitions. As well, Man was deficient in sensitivity, had no awareness of the multitude of life that filled the world both seen and unseen. Every life intersecting with all others, each connected, dependent one upon the other in ways Man, in his conceit, thought were superstitions and the ignorance of barbarians.

It seemed a dreadful injustice that so much was to parish at the hands of creatures who behaved as though they were little more than animals themselves. It was as if a huge predator feasted on and squabbled over the paralyzed body of the youthful singer, who could only stare at them with puzzled eyes as they slowly robbed him of an exquisite existence. One that Man would never appreciate; never know what they were shredding with claws of ignorance and pride.

It was unjust.

By creating Man, the universe had betrayed the Na'vi. But it was a perpetual and familiar injustice. The sentient may perceive and love the universe, but the universe cannot perceive and love the sentient. The universe sees no distinction between the multitude of creatures and elements that comprise it. All are equal. None are favored. The universe, equipped with nothing but the materials of the power of creation, continues to create: something of this, something of that. It cannot control what it creates and it cannot, it seems, be controlled by its creations. Those who curse the workings of the universe curse that which is death. Those who strike out at those workings fight that which is inviolate. Those who shake their fists, shake their fists at blind stars.

But this does not mean that there are some who will not try to do battle with and destroy the invulnerable. There will always be such beings, possessed of a spirit greater than themselves.

Sometimes these are beings of great wisdom, however more often it is a being, more ordinary than not, but seemingly touched by fate. A being, as yet unaware, that is constantly tempered on the forge of destiny. Methodically hammered into shape tested, and found wanting, so is shattered and reformed. Remade from its flawed pieces to once again be tested, and once again, found unsound.

Torn apart and melted down time and again until, melded by experience, and tempered in pain and sadness one last time this being is held to the fire, impurities burned away, finally ready to be quenched in the icy waters of destiny. Reborn shinning like a spark in darkness, at last the perfect blade is forged.

Then again, it could just be a being of no special merit that the universe likes to screw with.

However, it doesn't matter if this being is champion or dupe, saint, sinner, wise man or fool. It will always be someone who can not bear to believe in an insouciant universe. A being, who, in a defining moment stands to be counted and thus becomes a tool for change. For good or ill, even the universe would not dare to presume to say.

This is the story of just such beings, imperfect and stumbling. Bearing burdens they believe beyond their strength to endure, until fate brings them together, and together find strength and purpose that no one could have for seen.

Together they must learn to protect the balance.

Reference:

1. Ewya: Sometimes called “The Mother” by the Na’vi is the guiding force of Pandora and the Na'vi. Connected to everything on Pandora through a system of neuro-conductive fibers. Literally the Mind of Pandora. The sentient Spirit of the planet. Compared to a biological computer by human scientists. Information can actually be up and downloaded through tendrils all living things on Pandora are born with.
2. Yerik: A hexapede (Human). One of the most beautiful and fragile creatures of Pandora.

TBC

Avatar FanFic: To Protect the Balance.

REVISED (Cause I had a major brain glitch)

(Well everyone I've been told that I should try my hand at writing a FanFic. Apparently as I am able to write poetry some people think I should be able to write fiction as well so... I'm going to give it a shot. Recently I went and saw the movie Avatar. If you haven't seen the movie you really should, it is absolutely incredible. You really need to see it in IMAX 3-D to get the complete effect. Those of you who have not seen it probably won't understand a lot of what's going on (or any of it for that matter). This movie really is beautiful.

This is the first FanFic that I've actually been able to capture that annoying plot bunny that's been bouncing around in the empty space between my ears. As this is my first fan fiction any comments, suggestions or positive Concrit is appreciated. I really want to thank the one person who has been naggi...err...umm...ahh encouraging (yeah... that's the word Encouraging ... yeah) ... me to try my hand at writing. She has also been kind enough to beta my first attempt.

So without further delay I give to you: To Protect the Balance.)

Currently my completed outline contains a total of 20 chapters. I am trying to limit each chapter to be between a min. of 1,000 and max of 3,000 words per chapter. I can't promise to hold to that for every chapter, as one of them is over 4,500 words and I can't find a logical place to split it into two. I know as a first time writer this might (ha ha ha) be a tiny bit ambitious, but I promise I will complete it if it kills me (and you) in the process.

After getting input from my favorite Author purpledodah along with some excellent advice from the Na'vi forums I decided to scrap and change a few things around.

The Chapter Posting is a bit different from what you might be used to. But I think it will help both readers and myself.

So.... A quick note about flow:

Chapter 0.00 (This page) is a quick overview to help readers understand the why of me going off on a tangent, chapter posting wise. Ya ya its not really a Chapter exactly..... but if you squint just right, and hold your head at just the correct angle.. (right about where the good gods split ya), sprinkle a bit of fairy dust (the white powder kind works best), well WALA!! its a Chapter!!! See that wasn't so hard now was it? Come'on people keep up with me here....

Chapter 0.50 "Chapter Reference Guide" This chapter will be an ever evolving reference guide to the story as a whole. Here the reader can easily find translations of Na'vi words, phrases, as well as Information on Pandora referenced in the story. (Erm, see above explanation of my definition of a chapter. Don't forget the fairy dust is helps a whole lot!!!)

Every reference point will be listed by chapter to make it easy to find the meaning of a word, concept etc listed in one of the previous chapters. Of course each chapter will contain its specific reference list as well. As the story evolves I may decide to change how the information is listed here, but for now it will be listed via posted chapter name and number. One of the great things about search functions is you can just highlight the word you are unsure of, open Guide Chapter and do a find to quickly refresh you memory.

I truly hope that this will aid the reader in getting a deeper understanding and feel for the incredible world of Pandora and the Na'vi who live there and in my mind.

Now here is the Kicker!! Look MA an actual CHAPTER. Words that tell a story instead of 'splainy, geeky babble. Knew he had it in him didn't ya. (Hurm... is that a little split personalityish?? Shhh, maybe he won't notice as he is playing with the pink fuzzy bunnies at the moment. Awww aint that just the cutest thing ever...)

Chapter 1: "To Protect the Balance" is the actual start of the story and a prologue leading up to the time in history that the story is set in.

Chapter 2: "Tristan" is the chapter that was previously posted ( Ya won't find it cause I blowed it up reaaaallll gud. Damn (sniff) I am so proud of that kid sometimes ya know)

Chapter 3: "To the PLEASE GOD MAKE IT STOP Chapter "The End": Look for future updates! (Unless he petted the bunnies 'till they went POOF! Then all you will get is Rabid plot DoDo's cause those bunnies don't always play fair.)

One last thing to note. I debated on using the actual Na'vi language or using italics to indicate the that a character was speaking in Na'vi. While the italics would be the easy way to go it left me feeling that the story lacked an added layer that I felt is important. One of the wonderful things about watching Avatar was hearing the Na'vi use their own language. It brought a deeper feeling of "reality" to the movie.

Na’viyä (The Na’vi language) was created by Paul Frommer, a professor at USC with a doctorate in linguistics. There are about 1000 words in the Na'vi lexicon to date, and Dr. Frommer has promised to continue to evolve the language as long as the Powers that own the Avatar franchise don't disagree with his and the Avatar fan base desire to expand and learn. There has been world wide support for the project, and Dr. Frommer is currently waiting for a decision.

If you wish to learn more please check out http://www.learnnavi.org and to hear the language spoken by its creator, as well as to add your voice to the growing petition to continue to evolve the language please go to http://masempul.org

I wish to thank the wonderful people at the Learn Na'vi Community for their aid in helping me understand an incredible complicated language and keeping me as true to that language when using it in this work of Fan Fiction.

So to you my readers, thank you for your patience and I look forward to your feedback! As this is my first ever attempt to write fiction, your comments and suggestions can only help me improve.

On to the story.....

TBC

Fic Search

Yup I know, another one of those annoying fic searches. Both are by the same author.

First is a SciFi Spike/Xander fic. Set in an Alternate Universe. Spike Angel are Genetically different from humans. What I can remember is Xander gets captured by Spike when Spike raids a ship for supplies. Xander is someone important and close to Buffy. Willow is a something like a Techno-Mage. After Xan gets captured he falls for Spike, and Spike for him. After an outlaw faction attacks a human outpost Xander returns to Buffy to try and rescue Spike. Also Xander has been changed. Buffy and Willow and Tara learn that Giles and the Council have been lying to control the Slayer line, breeding them to be obedient to their watcher. Xander reveals that he has been changed when the truth about Giles and Council lying and Willow helps him and Spike escape. Hope that is enough to go on.

The Second is Fantasy. Spike is sold by his people into slavery. Xander is trying to find a warrior that can help his people fight and survive and sees Spike on the slave auction and he buys him to save him from being a sex toy. But one of the conditions is that Spike has to be bound to him. Because of the language barrier Spike does not realize that Xander only wanted to help and thinks that he has been bought as a toy. Xander gives control over to Spike and Spike hurts him pretty badly. Xander gives up his future plans of marriage because if Spike cant be free then he wont be either. Know its kind of vague but hope it clicks with someone.

Thanks.

I'm not sure how I found this Video. Or the video that led to it but all I can do is dispair when reading the amount of not only negative comments this brave young man received, but reel back in horror at the cruel and utterly inhuman people that would respond like this to a child. The heartless remarks are hurtful enough to an adult with the maturity to understand and process the hate and bile, but to subject an 10 year old to it? I just pray a spirit like his will prevail and not be broken. The sadest thing is the sheer NUMBER of hateful comments. I wish I had never come across it, but I did and will never forget.

Here is the video report that he is talking about. Watch it 1st (hope you have a strong stomach), then watch the video of this kid and his response. Read the comments and you will know why I feel such outrage and dispair for the human race. The saddest thing about the negative comments is he ASKS that if you don't agree to please not comment. For Gods sake its a child reaching out for some HOPE.

<lj-embed id="19" />

His Response to the above Video.
